Restoring Sudbury’s Landscape
The Greater Sudbury area, once heavily degraded by industrial activities such as mining and logging, has been undergoing an impressive urban restoration since 1978. The focus of this ongoing effort is not just to rehabilitate the landscape but also to reintroduce vital biodiversity to the city. By transforming bare, contaminated land into thriving habitats, this project aims to create urban green spaces that benefit both the local ecosystem and the community. These restored areas are crucial for improving air quality, enhancing urban resilience, and providing residents with natural spaces to connect with.
Project Description
Unfortunately, due to industrial activities, such as logging and the mining of nickel and copper ore the land sand hilltops in the proximity of Greater Sudbury were degraded, bare of vegetation and soils heavily contaminated. Since 1978, the municipal government has undertaken measures to restore the Greater Sudbury area. This effort is giving residents increased access to clean water, air, recreational space, enhanced biodiversity, and increased habitat for wildlife. The goal of this project is to continue to rehabilitate Sudbury’s natural landscape, which will provide valuable habitats for biodiversity as well as benefits for the city at large. The trees being planted are carefully selected to represent the local ecosystem and assist with natural regeneration. They include, Tamarack, Ironwood, Spruce, Oak, Jack Pine, Red Pine, Eastern Hemlock, Mountain Maple, and many more!
